Users Stopping Anti-Obesity Medications Regain Pounds Four Times Faster Compared to Dieters
A recent study indicates that patients who discontinue blockbuster slimming jabs like semaglutide or tirzepatide may regain shed pounds far faster than those who halt conventional diet and exercise programs.
Findings released in a major medical journal shows that while obese individuals can lose about a fifth of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the mass comes back at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.
"Individuals purchasing such treatments need to be cognizant of the risk of fast weight regain when the medication is stopped," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of regain suggests a return to original weight in about one and a half years.
Comparing Therapies
The research, which looked at 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the effects of these new drugs with other pills.
Researchers emphasize that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise generally experience a less rapid weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.
Explaining the Rapid Regain
Experts believe the way of the drugs is key to understanding the amplified regain.
These medications copy a natural hormone called GLP-1, which controls hunger.
"Long-term administration of GLP-1 levels far above than the body's typical production may cause the system to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and could lessen sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.
"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to hunger is uncontrolled, making excessive eating a significant risk."
A Chronic Disease?
The NHS recommend the injections for people with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.
Many experts contend that, due to the high risk of relapse, the treatment should be considered life-long.
This perspective is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the findings "underscore the persistent character of excess weight," similar to managing diseases like diabetes.
User Accounts
Users who have come off the jabs report a sudden return of appetite.
"I experienced something flipping and I was suddenly extremely hungry," recalled an individual.
The struggle is exacerbated if patients have not adopted lasting lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.
Significant Adoption
Recent estimates suggest that a significant number of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with demand being substantial.
- Use is greater among women than males.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest usage rates.
- Many access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
In conclusion, experts caution that while these medications are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a magic solution and lasting health benefits hinges on integrated lifestyle support.
